JOSEPH MILAZZO

HOW NOT TO BE INTIMIDATED BY POETRY &

Perhaps Write Some of Your Own

Don’t be afraid to briefly step away from the cerebral and begin to see and feel your work.  Soothe your artistic anxieties with a discussion with poet and author, Joseph Milazzo that takes the mystery out of poetry and creative writing.

Together, we will work to demystify the various ways in which poets — and poems — create artistic experiences via careful, imaginative manipulations of language. We will read aloud poems by a diverse array of poets and discuss the various elements of poetic expression and how those elements make meaning. The manner in which the poem sounds itself out; its form or "body" on the page; the images active within its saying; etc. Finally, we will apply what we have gleaned from this collective reading to a short creative writing exercise designed to encourage further appreciation of poetic language as an artistic medium.

Joseph Milazzo is a writer, editor, educator, designer, and the author of the novel Crepuscule W/ Nellie (Civil Coping Mechanisms) and two full-length poetry collections: The Habiliments (Apostrophe Books) and Of All Places In This Place Of All Places (Spuyten Duyvil). His writings have appeared in Black Clock, Black Warrior Review, BOMB, The Collagist, Prelude, Tammy, Texas Review, and other publications. In addition to co-curating the online interdisciplinary arts journal [out of nothing], he is an Associate Editor at Southwest Review, a Contributing Editor at Entropy, and the proprietor of Imipolex Press.

Joseph lives and works in Dallas, Texas. His virtual location is www.joe-milazzo.com.
