    It's Not a Cult - Book Club/Literary Fiction - Amazon - Barnes & Noble

Mona Awad's All's Well meets Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in Lauren Danhof's darkly humorous debut, in which a daughter races to save her mother from a dangerous cult before it's too late.

Glinda Glass is truly trying her best. After dropping out of her graduate school program, she moves back to her childhood home with her mom—who has not only joined a cult, the Starlight Pioneer Society, but has also become enraptured by its charismatic and menacing leader, Arlon. Meanwhile, Glinda spends her days working in the Drench-the-Wench dunk booth at the local Renaissance fair with her only friend Troy—who may be falling in love with her.

When Glinda learns that the cult will be turning her family’s home into their commune, she decides to take matters into her own hands—by infiltrating the cult and taking it down from the inside. There, she realizes things are far more sinister than she could have ever imagined and that she must get her mom out from under the spell of Arlon by any means necessary.

But Glinda can’t do it on her own; to save her mother, she’ll have to confront her own history of trauma and grief and repair her relationships with her sisters and Troy, no matter the cost.

Daughter of Ash and Myth - Young Adult Fantasy - Author's Store - Amazon

They say heroes are forged in fire… Jessa Whitley is about to burn.

Jessa knew finishing junior year would be tough. Dodging her ex and surviving finals was enough to handle. But finding out she’s Hercules reincarnate? The gods clearly have other plans and now her ancient soul is back in the mortal realm with one colossal mission: kick demon ass and maintain the fragile balance between gods and mortals… all while needing an inhaler to breathe at every jump scare.

The god of Death is hunting her, the gates of Hell are wide open, and chaos is ripping through the mortal world. Forget training, Jessa’s life is a crash course in survival. Balancing her Herculean destiny with a “normal” life? Not a chance. Then there’s Paul, a maddeningly protective god whose presence sets her nerves (and heart) on edge. Their undeniable attraction only deepens the tension, pulling Jessa into a web of secrets she’s not sure she’s ready to unravel.

As the apocalypse ignites, Jessa must decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice. Embrace her mythic legacy? Or risk losing everyone she loves as the world burns to ash?

Magicbound - Young Adult Fantasy - Author's Store - Amazon

“To save Aetherealm, you must embrace the evil you fear most. For often, the greatest heroes are those brave enough to wear the mask of a villain.”

In Aetherealm, where magic is woven into the very fabric of the world, the fragile balance between light and dark teeters on the edge of ruin. Rooted in ancient powers, the realm’s equilibrium is delicate, and Lusa, hunted as a mage in a land where magic is now forbidden, is caught between two fates. Her powers are both her greatest weapon and her deadliest curse. Bound to a bounty hunter whose loyalty is as elusive as his past, Lusa must make a choice that will either save the realm—or plunge it into eternal darkness.

As a dark sorcerer rises, ruthlessly extinguishing all who stand in his way, he sets his sights on shattering the light and bending all magic to his will. With the mages of Aetherealm hunted and slain, Lusa is the last one left to confront him. Her Dark Magics, sentient and insidious, pull at her like a puppet master, tempting her with promises of power through terrible acts. To defeat the sorcerer, she may have to surrender to the very evil she’s spent her life resisting. But embracing that power will not only devour her soul, it will forge her into a weapon of destruction, capable of obliterating everything, and everyone, she’s come to love.

Lost meets Stranger Things in this eerie, immersive YA thriller, thrusting seventeen-year-old Sia into a reality where the waters in front of her and the jungle behind her are as dangerous as the survivors alongside her.

Sia practically grew up in the water scuba diving, and wreck dives are run of the mill. Take the tourists out. Explore the reef. Uncover the secrets locked in the sunken craft. But this time ... the dive goes terribly wrong.

Attacked by a mysterious creature, Sia's boat is sunk, her customers are killed, and she washes up on a deserted island with no sign of rescue in sight. Waiting in the water is a seemingly unstoppable monster that is still hungry. In the jungle just off the beach are dangers best left untested. When Sia reunites with a handful of survivors, she sees it as the first sign of light.

    Sia is wrong.

Between the gulf of deadly seawater in front of her and suffocating depth of the jungle behind her, even the island isn't what it seems.

Haunted by her own mistakes and an inescapable dread, Sia's best hope for finding answers may rest in the center of the island, at the bottom of a flooded sinkhole that only she has the skills to navigate. But even if the creature lurking in the depths doesn't swallow her and the other survivors, the secrets of their fractured reality on the island might.

    Fractured Tide:
    - Is an eerie and immersive YA thriller told through journal entries from a daughter to her father.
    - Unfolds through the eyes of a narrator who keeps you guessing until the final pages
    - Is a gripping mix of suspense and horror; perfect for readers ages 13 and up

A teenage psychic is drawn deep into the honeycomb of an abandoned hotel—and into a cat-and-mouse game with a predatory entity—in this riveting new supernatural horror novel.

"SO SCARY, IT GIVES DARKNESS A BAD NAME! When I finished the last page, I realized I was still shivering."—R.L. STINE, author of Goosebumps and Fear Street

Everyone in Gypsum, Texas knows the Hotel Alvarado changes at night—especially Quinn. A teenage clairvoyant, he’s been having dreams about it… dreams that call him to its dark, abandoned halls. The hotel is a monument to the town’s more prosperous past, when celebrities flocked to the mineral spas and films were shot in the desert. The Great Depression killed all of that, it killed the Alvarado, and frankly it killed Gypsum, too. Now, when the sun goes down, things no longer living stir deep within its creaking depths.

But the dreams are relentless. When Quinn braves the hotel’s darkness with his best friend June and unrequited love Selena, looking for answers, he gets only one: ghosts aren’t the scariest thing lurking inside the Alvarado (although they’re there, cold and restless and angry).

No. He’s been called by something worse: a predatory, inhuman entity that threatens to wipe Gypsum off the map, along with everyone in it. And wrongly—accidentally—he’s let it out. It takes the shape of a handsome young man. It walks. It talks. It laughs. It can even make you laugh. But its appetite for death can never be sated.

Quinn has always had the power to see the future… can he find the power to change it?

When a rogue object from space is on a collision course with Earth, we naturally shoot a nuclear missile at it. Altered radiation spreads through the atmosphere, causing a lucky/unlucky few of us to develop peculiar, amazing, or downright awful abilities. They are the Adapted. What’s next?

A new government agency, of course! Popular and progress-minded President Phelps creates the Radiologically Adapted Dangers to Society Administration. RADSA is charged with helping the Adapted become a welcome part of society, but also capture those with abilities deemed too powerful or unsafe.

The Adapted they encounter with abilities on the Dangers to Society list must be sent to a remote island for the safety of everyone else. No ifs, ands, or due process. One of the agents has an ability on that list.

More rogue objects strike. But when internal strife splits the team, catastrophe looms large across the planet. Can the team put their differences aside in time to stop the biggest and deadliest conspiracy the world has ever known?

“Don’t he look like a sweet little bunny?”

The kind-hearted delivery nurse had no way of knowing that her well-intentioned words would doom Bunny Boy Potts to a lifetime of ridicule. Well, that and the unfortunate way his ears stuck out like two ping-pong paddles.

Living with his unhinged single mother, his entire life is spent apologizing for existing while scraping by for enough to survive. Food and love—neither is freely available in the Potts’ home, but the sharp sting of the strap is always on standby.

When Bunny meets Raquel, he thinks she could take him from scarecrow misfit to normal teen. Growing in the sunshine of her approval, Bunny even gets a job from his rancher neighbor, TC. For the first time in his life, Bunny can buy clothes that fit. He can eat enough to stave off the hunger that used to sing him to sleep every night. Along with a paycheck, he earns a nickname and the grudging respect of those around him as he begins to rise above the hand he’s been dealt.

But Bunny Boy Potts wasn’t meant to have a life like everyone else.

    THE 2025 PARTICIPATING AUTHORS

We had a great collection of twenty Workshop authors represent all sorts of genres and age groups. Everything from debut authors to new releases to long-time members with many books to peruse! Throughout the event, the authors read excerpts from  their books in the HPB Community Room (schedule found below the author list).

J.B. Abbott (Brian Tracey) - Mystery

Brian Tracey is the past Chairman of DFWCon, Texas's premier multi-genre writing conference. He's an active member and long-serving officer of the DFW Writers’ Workshop and a member of International Thriller Writers, serving as a volunteer in several capacities for ITW's annual conference, ThrillerFest. He's published business articles and white papers, and his short stories have appeared in Suspense Magazine (written as Patrick J. McKnight). In addition to his thrillers, he also writes cozy mysteries with Jeff Ayers. He lives in Texas with his wife, two children, two cats and many rabbits who've claimed his yard as their own.

    Tricia Allen - Mystery

A fan of 1940s noir, Texas history, Dallas history, and a good mystery, Tricia Allen combines all four in her series set in 1947 Dallas. In Texas Weather, prosecutor David Weather and reporter Jane Alder work a sensational murder trial while a stalker and a serial killer watch, wait, and kill. Blood, betrayal, and surprises abound. David and Jane return in A Well-Respected Dead Man, set against the backdrop of the factual April 1947 Texas City explosion. Dallas gambling mob boss Willie Peabody pays Weather a visit, then turns up dead in the Trinity river bottoms. Jane goes undercover in the mob while Weather sets out to catch the mobster's killers. Tricia is a long-time member of the DFW Writers' Workshop, Sisters in Crime, and Mystery Writers of America.

Brian Bruderer - Children's Chapter Books

Brian Bruderer was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He currently lives with his loving wife Vickie in Allen, Texas where they raised five children who have grown and are raising 14 grandchildren. Brian got his private pilot’s license at age 17. Brian started dabbling in writing in 1999. He wrote two unpublished books and got the idea for Moth and Butterfly in 2018. After finishing a first draft in 2021 Elizabeth Firmage agreed to be the illustrator. She has been instrumental in enhancing the story into what it is today. Originally the bats were to be terrifying creatures of evil. Elizabeth objected to vilifying the bats just because they are predators. That inspired the idea of having Butterfly learn about love by seeing the bond between a mama bat and her pup.

    Russell C. Connor - Horror

Russell C. Connor has been writing horror since the age of five, and is the author of three short story collections, nine eNovellas, and seventeen novels.
