Del Cain, one of our lifetime members, has been busy lately. Both of his poetry books, Songs on a Prairie Wind and Voices of Christmas are available for purchase. Catch him at a meeting for a signed copy.
He also got news from Dos Gatos Press that one of his poems, Tableland, will be included in their 2015 Texas Poetry Calendar. This is one of the most impressive and sought after publications for poetry in the state. We aren't surprised he's one of their chosen.
To top this off, he was recently featured on Blog Talk Radio's IndieReview Behind the Scenes segment. Catch his podcast HERE.
Finally, we’re told one of his guitars has birthed twin mandolins. We have a suspicion he’s writing a song or two to go along with them, and we couldn't be happier. Del has a tendency to make some beautiful music.

2014 DFW Teen Writers' Workshop

DFW Writers’ Workshop is very proud to announce the schedule for the 2014 Teen Writer’s Summer Workshop! The best part of this announcement is….the workshop is completely FREE.
The scheduled events will take place at The Egg & I on Hwy. 26, from 12:30 to 2:30. Below are the dates and the list of speakers, who are all DFWWW members and traditionally published authors. The sessions will include instruction and critique time.
With registration, teens will get a binder full of helpful advice. At the end of the workshop, an anthology will be created with their work. It will include a short story, excerpt, or poem that is polished during the six-week session. Each student will get a printed copy and may purchase as many additional copies as they’d like. AND there’s a t-shirt, designed by our very own Sally Hamilton.
In short: THIS IS GOING TO BE AMAZING.
To register you must meet these requirements:
- Be entering 9th-12th grade.
- Be able to commit to at least 3 of the 6 Saturday sessions.
- Email your name, age, the dates you expect to attend, and the type of writing you enjoy to the following address: dfwwritersworkshop(at)hotmail. Please make the subject: TEEN WORKSHOP
The schedule is as follows:
July 12 -- The Written World taught by Del Cain (a general overview of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, songwriting and screen/playwriting)
July 19 -- The Critique Process taught by Tex Thompson (beginning with her 11th grade first draft through production of her book, One Night in Sixes)
July 26 -- Story Structure taught by Kat Cook (using the hero's journey)
August 2 -- Voice taught by Jenny Martin.
August 9 -- Character Development taught by Rosemary Clement
August 16 -- Publishing taught by A. Lee Martinez (how the publishing world works, different avenues to publication)

If you write poetry, wish you did, or just like it--don’t miss the 22nd annual Austin International Poetry Festival on April (poetry month) 3-6, 2014.From Thursday through Sunday there will be open mics, workshops, special readings, and a continuous stream of all things poetry. All registrants are given a ten minute time slot to read their own work. (Go to the slam if at all possible!) Fellow attendees, numbering in the hundreds, are from both coasts and across the pond. The cost is $45 or, for students and retirees, $30.
Register before Jan. 15th to submit up to three poems for consideration for the formal anthology, di*verse*city. If one is selected, it will be considered for possible prizes as well. Watch the website- www.aipf.org -for more information.

Harry Hall announced that he and fellow member John Keith will be taking over the Running Debate in Texas Tri-athlete News magazine. Harry will write the ‘Runner’ side and John will write the ‘Non-runner’ side. Their first column appears in the December issue.

YES! The Trophy Room Will Keep Growing. Three DFWWW Authors Sell Books
Five visitors joined a standing-room only crowd at the November 10 meeting of the Workshop.
It seemed as if the news and announcements would never end. Candace Havens delivered her newest book, Turn and Dare, to Harlequin. A. Lee Martinez' newest novel, Catching the Moon, was accepted by Orbit. Delacorte accepted Rosemary Clement-Moore's newest work, Texas Gothic, and the book is already available for pre-order at Amazon.com.
Del Cain reported a successful event at the Saginaw Public Library last week. Russell Connor and A. Lee Martinez appeared, along with Rosemary Clement-Moore who was the keynote speaker. This weekend, Rosemary will appear at Readers & 'ritas in Allen, with Candace Havens as the Master of Ceremonies. Also this Saturday, A. Lee Martinez has a book signing at 2 p.m. at the Borders in Burleson.
Finally, President Russell Connor thanked a wide variety of volunteers who unselfishly give of their time each week. Harry Hall who arrives early to set up the building and to make coffee; Eric Dixon who never fails to monitor one of the read-and-critique rooms; former President Stephen Manning who assists the Board in making the hard decisions; and Jeff Posey, Jason Myers and Michelle O'Neal who work on the annual writers' conference.

Poetry, an Authors' Reception & Trophy Room Addition #304 Fill the News

In official business, historian Stephen Manning announced book 304 donated to the Trophy Room. (If the numbers keep growing at this pace, could another celebration be just around the corner?) President Russell Connor opened the nominations for the 2011 Board of Directors, with each current Board member describing his or her duties.
In other news, David Alkek had a poem titled "The Doorway" accepted by Abandoned Towers magazine. He also had a successful book signing for his nonfiction work, The Self-Creative Universe, recently in Plano. Del Cain reminded everyone that several DFWWW writers will attend an authors' reception at the Saginaw Public Library, Thursday, November 4 at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to meet the authors and to purchase signed copies of their books.
Finally, conference chairperson Jeff Posey described a few of the now 50-plus classes scheduled for the 2011 DFW Writers' Conference. The breadth of speakers and topics alone make the price of admission a bargain. Throw in 20 agents and editors, Thriller Master Sandra Brown as the keynote speaker, and you have one of the best values among writers' conferences in the country.
