In preparation for the upcoming DFW Writers' Conference, May 2&3 at the City of Grapevine Convention Center, Workshop member Rosemary Clement-Moore will speak at our regular meeting, 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 at the Ruth Millican Center, 205 Cullum Drive in Euless. Rosemary will offer invaluable advice for those preparing to pitch to agents at the conference. She'll tell you how to communicate your most important information quickly and professionally.

Dr. Theresa Kellam, the wife of Workshop member Kerry Kellam, recently became a published author. Her book is The Parent's Survival Guide: From Chaos to Harmony in Ten Weeks or Less. It's about improving communication and reducing conflict at home.

It's still 30 days out from the 2009 DFW Writers Conference, and we've already surpassed the number of registrations we had last year!
We have filled all the one-on-one pitch sessions for agents Sally Harding, Anne Hawkins and Gina Panettieri. But slots are still available with Doris Booth, Al Longden and Uwe Stender. It's time to get that registration in!

Michael Guinn to perform at DFW Writers Conference on May 3
Attendees at the DFW Writer's Conference, May 2&3 at the City of Grapevine Convention Center will be in for a treat. Spoken word artist and poet Michael Guinn, founder of Fort Worth Poetry Slams, will share his passion for poetry in a special presentation Sunday afternoon. Guinn will also conduct a workshop called "Writing From the Heart, Performing From the Soul."Guinn leads a weekly poetry slam and open mike session every Tuesday night and conducts poetry workshops for area youth. The DFW Writers' Workshop is proud to present a special conference on May 2 & 3 for writers. Meet other writers, learn the tricks of the trade from experts, and pitch your work to literary agents -- it's going to be a fantastic two days!
Our keynote speaker is New York Times bestselling author Bob Mayer. We are building a stellar lineup of speakers to share their insights on a wide range of writing-related topics.
Literary agents Uwe Stender, Gina Panettieri, Al Longden, Anne Hawkins, Sally Harding and Doris Booth will attend. There will be plenty of opportunities for attendees to meet these agents. Agents will be available for a limited number of one-on-one pitch sessions. Conference registrants will be contacted to arrange their meeting in order of registration.
The agent selection process has begun. We still have sessions available. So if you want to get in on one of these pitch sessions, the time to register is now!
Q. How do I arrange a pitch session and choose an agent?
A. After you register, you will be contacted in order of registration and informed which agents still have sessions available. You will be asked to indicate your first, second and third preferences.
Q. Why haven't I heard about a pitch session yet?
A. Emails went out on March 7, March 14 and March 16 to everyone who had registered up to that time. If you registered and did not receive the email, please contact us at [email protected]. There may be a problem with the email address you provided. Oddly, several paid registrants elected to provide a fake email address, making it impossible for us to contact them for a pitch session. If you did this thinking you were protecting yourself against spam, you were actually protecting yourself against the possibility of a pitch session with an agent. Please contact us as soon as possible.
Q. Why do I have to have a completed manuscript in order to pitch?
A. It is generally considered poor form to pitch an incomplete fiction manuscript to an agent. They want to hear about completed works; if they are interested, it's partly because your work fits into the current market and they want to see it now.
Q. Is there a special hotel rate available?
A. Yes. We have an arrangement with the Wyndham DFW Airport North, which is only minutes' drive away from the convention center. This special deal ends on April 9, so book with them now! More details are available here.
